TTR Group (parent cooperative): Founded: Thru numerous iterations from 1993 to present day Mission: Initially as the first multiroom realtime Web based conferencing service, it was to be an experiment in Internet communication including text, sound, pictures. All operating as a FREE SERVICE supporting the open enivronment of the Internet. Starting out, in combination with the folks at WBS we ran a server under Digital Equipments domain to test the possibilities. WBS separated to develop their own set of views, while we continued eventually spinning off the user base to AcmeWeb Inc, at that point it became Global Chat Services (using a PERL code base) As the user base grew phenominally it became clear a faster code base was in order, the code converted to NuChat and operated under the Intercontinental Conferencing service. At this point private conferencing with additional features became a paying service. In addition, the Themeplex concept grew with the Web based environments of RavensDale, ShadowZone, and AutumnStone growing to cater to specific evolving populations. As ICS grew up under Acmeweb and WSN (World SportsNet) many business opportunites drew portions of the core team (now 5 people) in different directions. In early 1997 each initiative moved forward, and one core member returned the service to PUBLIC access, offering the original conferencing environment under the auspices of TransTemporal Research.
Future: Certainly the presence of conferencing in various forms via the web will continue. We hope to continue to add innovations appropriate to making it useful, interesting, and positive for this strange, new global community. Humans have never seen a world where such immediate; direct; (sometimes initimate) interaction between geographically separated individuals, is so readily available. How it will affect us as a species is anyones guess. We bid you remember 4 things: |
